A Spearfish to Devils Tower day

Spearfish is close enough for an easy day trip and large enough to handle lodging, meals and supplies on either side of it.

Use Sundance for the most direct I-90 approach or loop through Belle Fourche, Aladdin and Hulett for a more scenic route. An early start still improves the park experience.

Direct route through Sundance

Follow I-90 west into Wyoming, then leave the interstate at Sundance for US 14 and Wyoming 24. This route makes Sundance the natural fuel, museum or meal stop.

It is the best choice when the Tower is the day’s clear priority and you want a predictable return to Spearfish.

Scenic route through Belle Fourche

Head north toward Belle Fourche, then cross into Wyoming through Aladdin and Hulett. The road is part of the day, with small-town stops and broad views.

Services are thinner after Belle Fourche, so confirm fuel and food before committing to a late or off-season drive.

At the monument

Allow two to four hours for a first visit. Tower Trail is the classic walk; Red Beds or Joyner Ridge extends the day and reduces the need for another attraction.

Summer visitors should aim for the earlier or later part of the day to reduce entrance and parking pressure.

Make the return different—but not crowded

A loop using Sundance one way and Hulett–Aladdin the other gives the day variety. Add either the Vore Buffalo Jump or one local museum, not every possible stop.

Return to Spearfish for dinner or stay in Wyoming if the trip continues west.

Best overall planTake the direct Sundance route in the morning and the Hulett–Aladdin road back when daylight is generous.
