Visit Devils Tower early, then stay in the Northern or Central Black Hills before continuing to Mount Rushmore the next day. A same-day link is possible, but it leaves little room for either place.
Day one · Devils Tower and the Northern Hills
Enter Devils Tower early and spend the morning on Tower Trail and the developed park area. Leave after lunch for Hulett, Aladdin and Belle Fourche or return through Sundance and Spearfish.
Stay in Spearfish, Deadwood or Lead depending on whether you want easy highway access, historic atmosphere or a head start toward the Central Hills.
Day two · Continue south
Drive toward Mount Rushmore with enough time for parking, the main viewing area and any interpretive walks you want to add.
Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon, Pactola Reservoir and other Black Hills stops are not minor pullouts. Choose one or save them for a third day.
Why one day is usually a mistake
The map encourages a landmark checklist: photograph the Tower, race south, photograph Mount Rushmore. That skips the trails, towns and scenery that make the route memorable.
Traffic, summer parking and construction can easily consume the margin. An overnight converts stress into a real trip.
Reverse the route when traveling west
If Mount Rushmore comes first, stay in the Northern Hills and reach Devils Tower the next morning. Continue to Sundance or Moorcroft for I-90 west.
This direction works especially well for travelers headed toward the Bighorn Mountains, Sheridan or Yellowstone.
