A Devils Tower and Black Hills road trip

Wyoming and South Dakota fit one natural loop. The key is dividing the landmarks, towns and scenic roads across enough days.

Allow at least three days for Devils Tower and the Northern Black Hills; four or five days creates room for Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park or the Southern Hills.

Day one · Enter Wyoming

From Spearfish or Belle Fourche, cross through Beulah and Sundance or take the smaller road through Aladdin and Hulett. Visit one museum or historical stop along the way.

Stay in Sundance or Hulett so the next morning begins close to the monument.

Day two · Devils Tower

Reach the park early. Walk Tower Trail and add Red Beds or Joyner Ridge if hiking is the priority.

After lunch, continue through the route you did not use on day one. End in Spearfish, Deadwood or Lead.

Day three · Northern Black Hills

Choose Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood and Lead, or a slower day based in Spearfish. Each choice can fill the day without Mount Rushmore.

If the trip ends here, return to I-90. If it continues south, sleep where the next morning’s drive is simple.

Days four and five · Southern Black Hills

Use a separate day for Mount Rushmore and another for Custer State Park, Needles Highway or Wind Cave country. Seasonal road closures can reshape this portion of the loop.

Avoid attaching the Southern Hills to a Tower morning unless the objective is simply to cover mileage.

The route works in either directionKeep the monument and the Southern Hills on different days, then reverse the loop to match your larger trip.
