Plan a Sturgis to Devils Tower drive

The Tower is an easy anchor for a Northern Black Hills driving day when the route includes enough time outside the vehicle.

Use I-90 and Sundance for the most direct approach. For variety, return through Hulett, Aladdin and Belle Fourche instead of retracing the same road.

Start early from Sturgis

Leave enough morning for the interstate drive, the park entrance and a complete Tower Trail walk. Summer parking and entrance lines are easier earlier in the day.

Check National Park Service alerts and Wyoming road conditions before departure, especially during construction, storms or major regional events.

Approach through Sundance

I-90 to Sundance provides the simplest route into Northeast Wyoming. Sundance is the practical stop for fuel, breakfast, groceries or a museum before turning toward Devils Tower.

Download directions before leaving the interstate. Mobile coverage can become inconsistent on rural roads.

Give the monument real time

Allow two to four hours for the park road, prairie dog town, visitor-center area and Tower Trail. A longer hike or ranger program can easily extend the visit.

Do not build the day around a precise departure minute. Weather, parking and the trail itself may change the pace.

Return by Hulett and Aladdin

For a loop, continue north through Hulett, then follow the route toward Aladdin and Belle Fourche before returning to Sturgis. The drive adds small-town and ranch-country scenery without repeating the approach.

Confirm fuel and food stops before committing to the loop, and avoid starting it late when daylight or weather is limited.

Best shape for the dayTake the direct route in, spend the middle of the day at the Tower, then use the northern road as the scenic return.
