Explore the Bearlodge Mountains

The Wyoming side of the Black Hills offers forested ridges, trail systems and a quieter outdoor counterpoint to the monument.

Use Sundance as the practical gateway to the Bearlodge Ranger District. Download a current map, check alerts and choose a trail that matches your vehicle and the season.

Start with the ranger district

The Bearlodge Ranger District is headquartered in Sundance and manages recreation on the northwestern Wyoming side of Black Hills National Forest. The district supports hiking, camping, hunting, winter use and other activities.

Stop or call for current maps, closures, fire restrictions and road information before heading deep into the forest.

Sundance trail systems

The Sundance Trail System crosses forested canyons and open ridges, with some viewpoints reaching toward Devils Tower, the Missouri Buttes and historic routes.

Trail 93 and its connected loops support different distances. Use the official map rather than improvising a loop from trailhead signs alone.

Choose roads carefully

Forest roads can become muddy, snow-covered or rough even when highways are clear. A passenger car may not fit every route, and navigation apps do not always reflect seasonal gates or surface conditions.

Tell someone the route, carry water and layers, and avoid depending on cell coverage.

Share the landscape

Expect wildlife, grazing, hunting seasons and multiple recreation types. Wear visible clothing when appropriate, control dogs where permitted and leave gates as found.

Fire rules and trail access can change quickly in dry weather. Same-day official information matters.

Best easy pairingSpend a morning at Devils Tower, then use Sundance for lunch and a shorter Bearlodge walk rather than attempting a long backcountry loop late in the day.
